Business agility is a defining competitive attribute for successful companies. There is no escape from this fact. Regardless of industry, enterprise organizations have come face to face with the need to adapt quickly to new realities. Whether that was due to new market challenges, customer demand for digital experiences, or the impact of COVID-19 expediting the decision to automate key processes; everyone has at least one example of where business agility was imperative. There is one area that saw a more prominent need than ever — the development of business applications, and there’s only one path to success here: be quick to design, test and launch such apps. The unwelcome news is that agility is increasingly difficult to achieve through traditional means. We live in a world marked by a serious shortage of IT talent. Talented developer resources are too scarce to satisfy the needs of every organization looking to innovate. In turn, this means that the costs to recruit, manage and retain large technical teams are abnormally high.

In this environment, many enterprise organizations will struggle to deliver the volume of business applications that are so desperately needed at a fast enough rate to satisfy demand. With traditional development projects taking months to complete, it is an all-too-common occurrence that a project delivers a new business solution — only for the market to have moved past the point where it would have made the biggest impact. Meanwhile, more projects have been added to the backlog of needed solutions.

Low-code makes businesses more Agile

This is precisely why we have seen such a dramatic rise in the use of low-code tools. Leading enterprises have started using low-code technology to help them deliver new business applications faster and to automate as many processes as possible, in as little time as possible. And since low-code automates most, if not all, of the code creation required to build an app, it removes the need for large chunks of hand-coding that would otherwise require developer resources. Freeing up those resources means that the organization can deliver more with less time and money, which is good for everyone.

Beyond that, a low-code platform is a perfect host for a democratized approach to business application development and workflow automation. One that can bring business and technical teams together, so that they can collaborate more effectively in order to provide the enterprise with an even faster time to value. Instead of taking several months to hand-code fresh solutions, teams can deliver in days or weeks with scope for continuous improvement and ease of change. All of this leads to a more agile organization that is better able to meet new market challenges, react quickly to world events, and meet the needs of its own employees for new business apps and process automation.

Given the impact that low-code is already making for enterprises in fast-moving, extremely competitive landscapes, anyone caught napping at a time when their competitors are pushing forward in this way could face a tough time ahead.
